PPEP, Inc. was founded by Dr. John David Arnold aboard a 1957 Chevy bus named "La Tortuga (tortoise)" with a $19,000 grant from the Tucson Committee for Economic Opportunity on August 24, 1967. Its mission was to "improve the quality of rural life." Four decades later PPEP remains dedicated to carrying out the dreams of its first Bracero migrant farm workers students for a better way of life. Click on the link for an update on PPEP's progress. Dr. John Arnold
Portable Practical Educational Preparation, Inc.
Tucson, Arizona

Congratulations on your creating and founding Portable Practical Educational Preparation, Inc.,(PPEP) 30 years ago. The work you began and have so carefully shepherded through 30 years of outstanding contribution to the residents of rural Arizona, is a remarkable tribute to your vision and dedication. Although tonight marks the 30th anniversary of PPEP, the Arizona community recognizes that you are the driving spirit in PPEP. It is your vision and energy that transformed "La Tortuga" into a major force for "Improving the Quality of Rural Life" in Arizona and in the world.

I know, too, that throughout these years you have surrounded yourself with an exceptionally wise, resourceful, and committed staff. Together, you and your staff, have created opportunities for many who had been excluded from the American dream. Through opportunities for education, economic and business development, child care, health care, housing, and job training, you have given hope to the hopeless; for them, you have made a rewarding future possible.

I also commend the many community volunteers who have served on PPEP's Board of Directors and in its programs over these 30 years. They, too, have served a greater vision and have provided a collective consciousness for PPEP's continuing to be a relevant, positive force in rural lives.

I applaud PPEP for so effectively focusing human energy on helping others to help themselves. PPEP's 30 years of history are about people and the resilience of the human spirit. May its future continue to be the same.
